Shavuot (literally "Weeks") is a Jewish holiday that occurs on the sixth day of the Hebrew month of Sivan (19th May, 2010). Shavuot commemorates the anniversary of the day God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses and the Israelites at Mount Sinai, although the association between the giving of the Torah (Matan Torah) and Shavuot is not explicit in the Biblical text. The holiday is one of the shalosh regalim, the three Biblical pilgrimage festivals. It marks the conclusion of the Counting of the Omer. The date of Shavuot is directly linked to that of Passover. The Torah mandates the seven-week Counting of the Omer, beginning on the second day of Passover and immediately followed by Shavuot. This counting of days and weeks is understood to express anticipation and desire for the Giving of the Torah. On Passover, the Jewish people were freed from their enslavement to Pharaoh; on Shavuot they were given the Torah and became a nation committed to serving God. Are you applying for a place at a Jewish school for September 2013? You may need to attend synagogue up to eight times to satisfy the criteria of the CRP for entry to a Jewish school or nursery. Dates that are eligible for recording attendance at Shabbat morning synagogue services are from 5 May 2012 to 26 January 2013: Attendance on Yom Tov or high Holydays are NOT eligible for CRP points. If you would like to register for "CRP" points please e mail admin@ebmc.org.uk. Please click here for further guidance on our process for registering for points. The Jewish Joint Burial Society (JJBS), which provides funeral services for 35 Reform, Masorti and Liberal congregations, has acquired a freehold parcel of land for the purposes of woodland and other burials. This is the first time woodland burials have been possible in a Jewish cemetery in the UK and it is believed to be the first faith woodland cemetery in the country. Members can now choose to be buried in an ecologically friendly way in a natural environment surrounded by newly planted trees. The burial can include a coffin made from bamboo or cardboard which decomposes naturally and instead of a large headstone there will be a small memorial plaque. read more... EBMC PARENT & TODDLER GROUP
Our Parent and Toddler Group gives you the opportunity where parents, grandparents or carers and their children can go to have fun and meet new people. Parents and carers remain with, and are responsible for, their children throughout the session. Our group meets once month for between one and two hours and we welcome children from birth to 3 or up to school age. Every group is different and it may take a few visits before you get to know the group and feel part of it. Sometimes the best way to get to know people is to get involved and offer to help.
